what we do

PENNYWORTH PRODUCTIONS is a company founded in 2016, which uses new writing to challenge old ideas. Made up of Co-Artistic Directors Julia Cranney and Liz Ward, resident director Kate Treadell and actress Debbie Brannan, our work aims to raise questions about today's world through the domestic and social sphere. Our work is firmly rooted in Merseyside and we are constantly looking to champion Northern voices and stories.

Our work aims to raise questions about today's world through the domestic and social sphere. All of our productions have at least a 50/50 gender split favouring women both on and off stage, and we look to start conversations about issues such as mental health, loneliness, and sexual politics that are often avoided. The company's debut production 'Empty Beds' was the winner of both The Scottish Daily Mail Award 2016 and an inaugural Eddies Award. In 2018 our double bill Moments/ Empty Beds secured a Offie nomination for Most Promising New Playwright for Julia.

Our  new writing night PEN showcases political new writing in all stages of development and has seen us working with over 100 artists since we began in 2017.
